Chiefs pour support into successful Metro flag football team

  • August 31, 2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The girls of the Kansas City Heat love football.

They’re a local flag football team that’s found a lot of success on the gridiron since the team’s formation almost two years ago. And the support they’ve received from the Kansas City Chiefs has played a big role in that.

“I find that with our female athletes, they’re more competitive. They belong out here, and they wanna prove that every time they step on the field,” Heat coach Kevin Porter said. “They love the science behind it. They love the competition.”

Since the team’s formation, and the quickly growing popularity of the sport, their 12U, 14U, and 17U teams have collected dozens of tournament wins at various sites across the country.

“It went from like a few teams in a little league, to tournament play and all these like crazy, nationals and championships. It’s crazy how much it grew,” player Kaliyah Fuel said.

This team is one of many flag football teams in the Kansas City Metro that the Chiefs are elevating in various ways.

“Our red team won the KC Chiefs Regional. So they threw a going away party, or going to Canton for the National Championship party, for us,” Coach Porter said.

Many NFL teams have youth flag football programs, but the Heat say the Chiefs go the extra mile.

“I don’t think a lot of the markets have what we have here,” Coach Porter added.

With the team being so closely related to the Chiefs, the girls all have favorite players they often try to model their play style off of. Their lists consist of future Hall of Famers like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, defensive stars like Nick Bolton, and speedsters like Xavier Worthy.

You can bet these girls have favorite Chiefs who they try to model their play style off of. For the quarterbacks, it’s of course Patrick Mahomes.

A lot of these girls started playing simply because they were exposed to the sport – and saw no reason why they couldn’t hit the gridiron too – and excel at it.

“I always liked playing football with my dad, and at recess,” said Allie Roberts.

And there’s now several dozen players with the KC Heat, highlighting the immense growth in the sport nationwide.

“It’s so much better having friends in this sport,” said Emeline Porter. “Cause when I first like start a new team, you don’t have any friends. But all my teammates are so nice.”

“It just started out very small, and just like grew over the years. And just became this significant and important part of my life,” said player Olivia Tilley.
