HENDERSON — For one final season, the Heartland boys are flying solo on the gridiron before joining forces with Hampton in 2026.

The Huskies’ last journey through the eight-man ranks got off to a rough start Friday night as they dropped their opener by a 44-16 tally against Thayer Central.

The Titans jumped all over the hosts early, racking up 22 points in the opening stanza and duplicating that mark in the second quarter for the 44-0 halftime lead.

Laken Wiedel had 124 yards and three scores on just four carries to lead the Thayer Central rushing attack. Brady Degenhardt added six rushes for 75 yards and two touchdowns as the Titans netted 356 total rushing yards.

Nevada Gloystein accounted for both of Heartland’s scores, first on a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 5:23 left in the third quarter and then again on a 46-yard scoring run with 6:58 left in the ballgame.
