The Seattle Seahawks drafted former North Dakota State star Grey Zabel in the first round with the intention of making him a pivotal part of their offensive line. It turns out he can do a little bit more than that.
With the Seahawks on the clock in the seventh round at pick No. 234, Seattle selected Iowa left tackle Mason Richman. Usually the task of calling a prospect to tell them they’ve been drafted is the responsibility of the head coach, the general manager, an assistant coach, a scout, or some other front office executive.
In this instance, those duties belonged to Grey Zabel. We’re talking about an o-lineman to o-lineman meet-and-greet over the phone. Have a listen and watch for yourself.
“I’m supposed to ask if you’re ready to be a Seahawk,” Zabel said.
“What’d you say?” Richman replied.
“I’m supposed to ask if you’re ready to be a Seahawk,” Zabel answered.
“Oh yeah, how’s that?” said Richman.
“Pick 234. It’s going to be called Mason Richman,” Zabel said.
“Alright. I’ll be waiting for it,” Richman responded.
Zabel did pass the phone over to Coach Mike Macdonald, saying “I think it might be a first” regarding this style of draft call.
The results of this draft won’t be known for a few more years. But the vibes right now? They’re very good.
