Carolina Panthers’ left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is “day to day,” said head coach Dave Canales, for Sunday’s Week 1 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ekwonu is eight days removed from having emergency surgery to remove his appendix. He did not practice on Monday.

The sixth overall pick by the Panthers in 2022, Ekwonu has started 49 out of 51 games during his first three seasons.

Over the last two years, he has been one of PFF’s higher graded run-blockers at the tackle position.

Backup options at tackle for the Panthers include Yosh Nijman and Brady Christensen.

Along with Ekwonu’s status being up in the air, the Panthers already know that they will be without wide receiver Jalen Coker, who was placed on IR recently due to a quad injury.

As a rookie in 2024, Coker caught 32 passes for 478 yards and two touchdowns. The Panthers signed Hunter Renfrow to bolster their receiver depth with Coker out and Adam Thielen having been traded to Minnesota.
