All told, the ACC had a solid showing in Week 1 to open up the college football season, with two of its programs picking up top-10 wins.
Entering the game as a 13.5-point underdog, Florida State and Tommy Castellanos created the biggest storyline of college football’s Week 1, rolling past No. 8 Alabama 31-17 for a stunning upset.

The second top-10 win for the ACC to open up the season came at Hard Rock Stadium, as Miami kicker Carter Davis hit a go-ahead 47-yard field goal for the Hurricanes to win a thriller against No. 5 Notre Dame. The Hurricanes‘ offseason acquisition, Carson Beck, shined in his first start at Miami, throwing for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

There was a third potential top-10 win out there for the ACC in Week 1, but No. 6 Clemson fell short against No. 9 LSU, 17-10, at Memorial Stadium. Dabo Swinney’s team held a 10-3 halftime lead but were then shut out by LSU’s defense in the second half.
Finally, on Monday, Sept. 1, North Carolina football opened up the Bill Belichick era in Chapel Hill with a highly anticipated but ultimately lopsided 48-14 loss against TCU on Labor Day.
