The San Francisco 49ers are doing their final maneuvers ahead of their 2025 season opener Sunday against Seattle, particularly in their wide receiver room.
After signing WR Russell Gage to a one-year deal a few days prior, San Francisco is releasing the 29-year-old, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
As mentioned in the reporting, the hope is that Gage will make his way to Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s practice squad in Santa Clara.
Roster juggling: 49ers releasing WR Russell Gage from their active roster, but intend to sign him to their practice squad and elevate him for Sunday’s game vs. Seattle if he does not sign elsewhere.

Brandon Aiyuk is going to miss the start of the season. Jauan Jennings’ availability (and contract) status is currently in question.
Demarcus Robinson is serving a three-game suspension to start the season. Rookie Jordan Watkins is still recovering from a high ankle sprain he suffered in their preseason debut.
Jacob Cowing, a 49ers 2024 fourth-round pick, will be out at least four weeks with a hamstring injury.
Ricky Persall and recently signed Skyy Moore and Marquez Valdes-Scantling will have to fill spots for facilitator Brock Purdy.
