After a whirlwind offseason of weddings (Aaron Rodgers), boat rides (Stefan Diggs), and strip clubs (NFLPA executive directors), the NFL season is finally upon us… along with the first injury report of the year.

The initial injury report of the week is a time when surprise injuries may be revealed. Fortunately, there were no surprises for this week.

NP – no practice, LP – limited practice, FP – full practice

__________________________DETROIT LIONS (estimated since no practice today)

The team is looking very healthy entering Week 1. All starters are absent from the report and are fully ready to go.

Isaac TeSlaa, WR – illness (LP)

The illness is minor and the LP suggests he is likely to be ready by Sunday.

Sione Vaki, RB – hamstring (NP)

Vaki’s hamstring has been an intermittent issue since July 21. It’s not a good sign that he is an NP this many weeks later. The impact of his loss will be almost entirely on special teams.

Kayode Awosika, OG – shoulder (LP)

The LP is reassuring that there is nothing serious for this backup guard.

Trevor Nowaske, LB – elbow (NP)

Nowaske played fully in the final preseason game. He was absent from practice recently and now we know why. The LB group is very healthy ahead of him, so his absence shouldn’t be a big deal.

NOTABLES UNLISTED

Graham Glasgow had a minor left lower leg injury two weeks ago.

Kerby Joseph has had a left knee issue since early in camp.

Mekhi Wingo (knee meniscus) came off PUP on August 19.

Khalil Dorsey (tib/fib fracture) came off PUP on August 18.

Taylor Decker had right shoulder cleanup surgery before training camp.

Sam LaPorta had an unspecified injury on August 13 that kept him out for just a few days.

PUP/NFI

Josh Paschal (unspecified cleanup surgery)

_________________________________GREEN BAY PACKERSMicah Parsons, EDGE – back (LP)

This reported facet joint issue is a common cause of low back pain. He has already been given a course of prednisone recently which can help with inflammation temporarily. But if he keeps aggravating the joint, the inflammation will return. Prednisone is not something that should be taken too often.

The ESPN report by Rob Demovsky states that he may receive an injection before the game. A pain-numbing injection into the joint is something that could help him get through a game.

The initial LP suggests that he is on track to play versus the Lions. However, he could be limited because the common movements of a pass rusher include lumbar extension and rotation which can aggravate facet joint pain.

Jordan Love, QB – left thumb (FP)

In mid-August, Love had left (non-throwing) UCL thumb ligament surgery. It won’t affect his throwing, but his ball security will be something to watch.

Jayden Reed, WR – foot (NP)

Reed had a Jones fracture diagnosis in early August. The Jones fracture location is at the 5th metatarsal of the foot and has notoriously poor healing. Often times, the fracture is surgically fixed, but even this is no guarantee of recovery – as seen notably this offseason with Christian Wilkins.

Nate Hobbs, CB – knee (NP)

This starting CB had a knee scope for a meniscus tear one month ago.

Elgton Jenkins, C – hip (LP)

This starting center’s status is something to watch.

Dontayvion Wicks, WR – calf (LP)

His calf was hurt early in camp.

Zayne Anderson, S – knee (LP)Barryn Sorrell, DL – knee (LP)Savion Williams, WR – hamstring (LP)NOTABLES

Christian Watson, WR had an ACL tear on January 6, 2025 and is on PUP.
