The Arizona Cardinals‘ first quarterback matchup of the 2025 NFL season is against Spencer Rattler, the newly named starter for the New Orleans Saints. Rattler, in his second NFL season, won the job over rookie Tyler Shoughin the offseason and preseason.
While Rattler is nearly universally viewed as the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, the Cardinals aren’t taking him for granted.

He has talent.
“There will be some known unknowns, but he is a good player,” Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said on Monday. “He has a live arm, he can move, (he) makes quick decisions.”
The challenge is also in the lack of film.
Rattler started six games as a rookie last season for New Orleans, but it was under a different head coach and offensive coordinator.
This year, “it’s a new system, new play caller, new team.” Kellen Moore is the head coach and calls plays. Doug Nussmeier is the offensive coordinator.
“Kellen is a really good play caller,” Gannon said. “Coach Nussmeier (has a) really good design of scheme and coaching the quarterback. They have some premier players over there, so (our) work (is) cut out for us.”
