Bijan Robinson’s talent has been optimized in Zac Robinson’s zone run concepts.

Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson finished the 2024 NFL season ranked third in the league with 1,456 rushing yards. The former No. 8 overall pick took his game to another level playing in Zac Robinson’s zone-heavy scheme.

Using a plethora of run concepts to get his backs in rhythm, the Falcons offensive coordinator’s system allows for the elusiveness and cutback ability of Robinson to prevail. The third-year back has excelled on inside and outside zone concepts.

Robinson’s acceleration and craftiness work to his advantage when deciding which gap to take on zone runs, oftentimes tricking defenders into committing to the wrong lane, and almost assuring a net gain on each attempt.

Gap decisions are based on what the running back sees when approaching the line of scrimmage after the hand-off, and with the Falcons operating out of 11 personnel primarily, they are able to exploit defenses who are often forced to play in nickel and dime personnel groups.

After a full summer of training camp with starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Zac Robinson is likely going to sequence in some RPO concepts to offset opposing defenses.

Fans should expect to see Bijan benefit from an improved passing game, and punish defenses too eager to drop into zone coverage versus the multifaceted Falcons offensive attack. As Bijan continues to build cohesion with his second-year play-caller, there’s really no telling how potent the Falcons offensive attack can become this season.

The Falcons will kick things off this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Check out the team’s updated 53-man roster and practice squad entering Week 1..
