Anthony Richardson’s future with the Indianapolis Colts remains uncertain after the organization opted to name Daniel Jones the starter over him to start the 2025 NFL season. And despite the fact that Colts GM Chris Ballard has made it incredibly clear that he has no plans to trade Richardson, one prominent NFL reporter believes that the situation is one that is worth paying attention to.
Inconsistency has plagued Richardson throughout his two-year NFL career, largely failing to show the kind of growth as a passer that Colts head coach Shane Steichen is looking for from him entering his third season in the league.
Barring an injury to Daniel Jones, Richardson will seemingly be spending the vast majority of the 2025 season watching from the sidelines after Shane Steichen declared that he will not have a short leash on Jones as the starter.

While Richardson has not yet requested a trade away from the organization or publicly voiced his desire to potentially play elsewhere, it seems as if the Richardson camp is at least keeping the possibility on the table.
According to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Richardson’s agent, Deiric Jackson, recently met with Chris Ballard to “clear the air” about his client’s future in Indianapolis, where the topic of a potential trade was discussed.

At least for the time being, it seems as if Richardson will be taking a wait and see approach to potentially see if he can earn the starting job again with the Colts.
As for how likely that scenario is, that obviously remains to be seen. But given the fact that Shane Steichen had no issue benching Richardson last season in favor of a 39 year-old Joe Flacco, it sure seems like Richardson at the very least has his work cut out for him to get back in Steichen’s good graces.
