Varsity All Access | Key games for week 3 of high school football

  • September 4, 2025

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – It’s time for week three of the high school football season across East Tennessee. Old rivalries are renewed, surprising unbeatens look to remain perfect and a few region-title contenders continue to search for win no. 1 in this week’s key games.

Keep up with high school football scores here.

ALCOA (2-0) at GIBBS (2-0)

Two teams with new signal callers in 2025 haven’t missed a beat. Alcoa has been one of the most impressive teams statewide, defeating Maryville in week one and thrashing Bearden, 63-13 in week two.

The Tornadoes travel to Gibbs for the first meeting between the two since the 1970s on Friday. Sophomore Keith Jones has the Eagles 2-0 following a statement win over Halls in week two.

Friday’s game is the region opener for both teams.

SOUTH DOYLE (2-0) at HERITAGE (1-0)

A pair of surprising unbeatens square off in week three, trying to remain perfect.

South-Doyle surpassed last season’s win total with a 31-21 win over Karns.

Joe Osovet’s Mountaineers have played just one game, but it may have been the biggest win of his tenure at Heritage. The Mountaineers took down CAK on the road, 28-21.

Heritage is seeking its first 2-0 start since 2010.

WEST (0-1) at CENTRAL (1-1)

Was last week more about Maryville or West? That’s what we’ll find out in week three.

The Rebels opened the season with a 48-7 loss to Maryville in the first game of the Barron Chandler era and will look to erase some doubts against an experienced Central squad this Friday.

The Wildcats lit up the scoreboard in a 48-19 win over Fulton in week two.

COALFIELD (0-2) at ROCKWOOD (1-1)

After one of the best seasons in school history, Coalfield has suffered back-to-back losses to open the 2025 season.

The Yellow Jackets were outscored 29-6 in the second half against Stone Memorial in week two, falling 48-41.

This week, they travel to Rockwood. Running back Jayden Davidson is the reigning WVLT Sports/5Star Preps Player of the Week after rushing for over 250 yards and intercepting a pass in the Tigers’ week two win over Wartburg Central.

LOUDON (1-1) at KINGSTON (1-0)

Kingston looks to have one of its best squads in years. It’s a small sample size, but the Yellow Jackets made easy work of Oliver Springs in its season opener, 46-22.

Following a 49-0 loss to William Blount in week one, Loudon took out some frustration on bitter rival Lenoir City in week two, taking down the Panthers 46-10 to win the Battle of the Bridge.
