The identity of the New York Jets this season will feature a strong focus on running the ball effectively. Behind running backs Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis, a lot of carries will be split between the three backs, along with starting quarterback Justin Fields.

Fields is one of the most dynamic runners at the quarterback position and in all of football, and will need to show off his wheels to help the Jets have success this season. Unfortunately for Fields and Jets fans, they just lost a starting guard for the season to injury and will quickly need to look via a trade or free agency to fill the hole left there.

Or possibly convince a recently retired veteran to lace up his cleats again. The perfect option to save the New York Jets’ season would be to sign Brandon Scherff and bring him out of retirement.

The New York Jets Will Bring Brandon Scherff Out of Retirement

The New York Jets want to run the ball. Everyone in the league knows the Jets want to run the ball. The Jets currently do not have the offensive line to bully another team in the trenches when everyone knows they are going to run the ball, even without Alijah-Vera Tucker. Currently, 26 year 26-year-old Xavier Newman is the next man up to take over the right guard position.

Newman is in his sixth season in the NFL and was an undrafted signee for the Tennessee Titans. Newman has only made five starts and appeared in 20 games over the past five seasons. This is not the player you want to hang your run-first identity on. Now, Scherff is no longer the elite run-blocking force he used to be, but he was still an elite-level pass blocker in 2024.

The New York Jets may not be the best running team, even if they do sign Scherff; however, you would be gaining a valuable veteran presence who knows what it took to become an elite run and pass blocker. This would shore up any pass blocking to allow Fields to throw when needed and give some confidence in the line for the season until Vera-Tucker gets healthy.

How Long Will Alijah Vera-Tucker Be Out?

The New York Jets suffered a major setback going into week one of the 2025 NFL season. Leading up to their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game filled with drama already, the Jets lost their best offensive lineman for potentially the entire season.

Jets Guard Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered a torn triceps during practice. Vera-Tucker has become the best lineman for the Jets and was in the middle of a contract year. Being given the franchise tag for the 2025 season by the Jets.

Vera-Tucker quickly became a leader and was meant to be a veteran presence to help mold the team’s 2025 first-round draft pick, right tackle Armand Membou. Now the Jets will need to patch that hole and find someone else to help Membou through his rookie season.

When Did Brandon Scherff Retire?

Brandon Scherff announced his retirement from the NFL on August 14th, leading up to the 2025 season. Scherff has been speculated throughout the offseason to sign with many teams, but ended up deciding on retirement instead. Many players end up retiring and quickly unretiring, so anything could happen.

The New York Jets need to at least make a call and give an aggressive offer to get him in the building. New head coach Aaron Glenn needs to turn the ship around quickly with a young and talented defense that won’t be there forever.

Scherff was a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders and quickly emerged as one of the most elite guards in all of football. After a ten-year career, Scherff still had value in the market and was heavily projected to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. Instead, he decided not to sign with anyone and retire quietly without an announcement.
