After being selected in the third round (No. 104) of the 2017 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, former Iowa football quarterback C.J. Beathard has signed a contract with the Detroit Lions‘ practice squad on Thursday morning, which will make him the No. 3 QB on their depth chart.

After three seasons with the 49ers from 2017-20, Beathard signed and played three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2021-23. Last season, Beathard spent most of the year on the Miami Dolphins‘ practice squad following a release by Jacksonville as part of an injury settlement.

Throughout his six seasons as a member of a 53-man NFL roster, Beathard has completed 60.4% of his passes for 3,886 passing yards and 19 touchdowns. Beathard also has four career rushing touchdowns.

The Lions have been looking for the right fit in another quarterback after releasing Hendon Hooker.

While Beathard may not see much action at all this season, given that the Lions have Jared Goff as their starter and Kyle Allen as backup, the former Hawkeye will still be able to bring a veteran presence to the team throughout the year.
