The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks will meet on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington for their 2025 season opener, which will give one team a leg up in the race for the NFC West crown.
Last year, San Francisco finished with a 6-11 record and in last in the division, while Seattle, with new head coach Mike Macdonald, went 10-7 and landed just behind the Los Angeles Rams in second place.
Both teams have made several moves to their roster and coaching staff that will significantly impact the results on the field on Sunday, but with all of the familiarity between these two teams, fans should know what to expect.
Before the 49ers and Seahawks take the field in Week 1, let’s make some bold predictions for the contest.
Christian McCaffrey returns and scores 2 TDs
McCaffrey appeared in just four games last season due to multiple injuries to his knee and ankle, and with that, he was held out of the end zone for the first time in his career. Now that he’s healthy, the former Offensive Player of the Year should make a huge difference on Sunday. His ability to affect the game as both a runner and pass-catcher gives him a chance to make up for lost time and score twice.
Sam Darnold sees ghosts again and commits multiple turnovers
Darnold was great for the Minnesota Vikings last year, bringing his team to a 14-3 record and completing 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on his way to his first Pro Bowl.
Now in Seattle, Darnold doesn’t have the weapons on the field or offensive guru on the sideline that he once did with the Vikings. The 49ers should be able to get after him and force him to make some mistakes.
Jake Moody bounces back and goes perfect
Moody was putrid in 2024, making just 70.6% of his field goals and 97% of his extra points, and he followed that up with an inconsistent training camp and preseason. With his last game leaving a sour taste in fans’ mouths, we predict that he’ll be better on Sunday to keep things frustrating.
Brock Purdy remains upright for the entire game
This may be the boldest claim of them all, as the 49ers offensive line didn’t look great at points during the preseason, but they were also without some of their biggest pieces. Keeping Leonard Williams, and Demarcus Lawrence off of Purdy is no easy task, but Chris Foerster’s group might be able to do just that.
