Coach of the Week Winners

This past Friday, Aug. 29, Head Coach Paul Forsythe guided Marengo Indians to a statement win, defeating Stillman Valley Cardinals 42-7. Despite facing adversity, including a possible season-ending injury to one of his top players, Forsythe kept his team focused, disciplined and motivated.

The dominant performance on both sides of the ball energized the program and set the tone for the season. Coach Forsythe is known for emphasizing resilience and mental toughness, teaching his players to concentrate on what they can control. Even when challenged with sudden setbacks, he instills confidence and ensures his team is prepared to execute their game plan.

Forsythe has served as Marengo’s head coach since 2017, following five seasons leading Minooka High School (Class 8A), where he guided the team to a playoff berth in 2015. Selected from a very competitive pool of candidates, he impressed Marengo’s leadership with his philosophy, personality and commitment to player development. The Morengo Indians will look to build on their momentum when they travel to Peotone, Ill., to face the Peotone Blue Demons on Friday, Sept. 5.

All-Star Award Winners

On Friday, Aug. 29, junior wide receiver and linebacker Maverick Shines delivered an exceptional all-around performance in Marengo’s 42-7 victory over Stillman Valley Cardinals. He rushed for 46 yards, added 58 receiving yards and scored three total touchdowns, while also recording three tackles (one for loss) on defense. His impact on both sides of the ball set the tone for the win and lifted his teammates in a statement game.

Although his night was cut short by a knee injury in the third quarter, Shines’ performance was a powerful display of the playmaking ability, leadership and energy he consistently brings to Marengo Indian’s program. As a team leader, he remains committed to supporting his teammates from the sideline, with hopes of helping guide them toward an IHSA title.

Away from football, Maverick brings the same discipline and work ethic to his daily life. He currently works at Cody’s Farm while balancing those responsibilities with his academics, maintaining a 3.5 GPA while taking AP courses.
