Watch out Steelers fans, No. 72 is reporting as eligible — just not for Pittsburgh.
On Thursday, the Chicago Bears hosted 11 players for workouts — including former Steelers OT Zach Banner, who lost more than 70 pounds while playing for the UFL’s Houston Roughnecks this past spring and is arguably in the best shape of his life in pursuit of an NFL comeback.
Banner, a beloved former Steeler who drew loud fan reactions anytime he reported eligible, was hit with a string of unfortunate injuries during his time in Pittsburgh. In 2020, Banner was named the starting right tackle but tore his ACL in the Steelers’ Week 1 season opener. Despite signing a two-year extension in 2021, his knee wasn’t fully recovered, and he was released in 2022.

Here’s to hoping Banner can find his way back onto an NFL squad — and potentially back with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as fans in attendance would love to hear “No. 72 is reporting as eligible” one more time.
