• CHEERS: Another Bills season begins on Sunday night with a playoff rematch against fellow AFC powerhouse, the Baltimore Ravens. It’s a huge game to kick off what could be a huge season if many of the national pundits are right. Yeah, yeah, we’ll shut up about all that — we don’t want to jinx anything, either. The season is big for another reason — it will be Highmark Stadium’s last hosting the Bills as they move into their new state-of-the-art stadium next year. To help celebrate the stadium’s “Rich” history, the “Highmark Stadium Sunday Night Lights” halftime show is taking place on Sunday night and will feature an eight-minute drone display and iconic images from the stadium’s past lighting up the night sky. A big-time game and a big-time halftime show — that’s how you kick off a new season of Buffalo Bills football.
• CHEERS: Speaking of kicking things off, we’re currently in the midst of a new area film fest — the DareDevil Film Festival runs through Sunday at the Doubletree Hotel on Buffalo Avenue with 28 feature films, documentaries, and short films. The majority of the entrees are international, coming from countries like Iran, India, Russia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Argentina, the United Kingdom and Denmark. The screening rooms will be two conference rooms inside the hotel. “It is an opportunity for people to come out and see a lot of different films from different countries,” said organizer David Lewis, a 20-year film industry veteran currently working as an independent filmmaker through his Renaissance Hands production company. Lewis is stressing a social justice angle with the films selected and shown. At least five of the filmmakers featured will be in attendance, talking about their visions for their projects. At 6 p.m. on Sunday, there will be an awards banquet where judges will award trophies for the best festival entrees. As for the future, Lewis plans to move the festival to the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, which is currently undergoing renovations. Stop by if you can this weekend and check it out.
