Pro Football Focus wrote an article this offseason detailing the top running back units in the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons are the top three units. The Ravens, led by Derrick Henry, possess the league’s most lethal backfield when you add in the threat of Lamar Jackson. But as far as the Denver Broncos, they have work to do — according to PFF.

PFF writer Dalton Wasserman ranked the Broncos unit No. 28, or the fifth-worst in the league. Although J.K. Dobbins is a solid signing, he does arrive with an injury history.

“Denver recently signed ex-Charger J.K. Dobbins, who returned from a torn Achilles to post a modest 67.1 PFF rushing grade in Los Angeles last season,” Wasserman wrote for PFF. “The team thought highly enough of UCF’s RJ Harvey to select him in the second round of this year’s draft. Harvey ranked eighth among FBS running backs with a 94.2 PFF rushing grade over the past two seasons. Jaleel McLaughlin returns as a potential change-up option in the passing game.”

This Sunday, the Broncos and Sean Payton get a chance to put to the test their on-paper improved running back unit against the Tennessee Titans. Perhaps the unit will rank higher on PFF’s list in 2025.
