The Bobcats got on the board in the rivalry last season with a 49-10 win. However, the Roadrunners have been one of the most consistent Group of 5 teams since hiring Jeff Traylor in 2020, and put up a fight in their Week 1 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies.

Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson is making his first-ever road start after a four-touchdown performance last week. The UTSA secondary doesn’t consist of world beaters, but Jackson’s biggest challenge might be handling the raucous crowd. Meanwhile, UTSA quarterback Owen McCown will face a Texas State secondary that’s still full of holes.

The two teams will likely look to establish the run game first and foremost. The Roadrunners’ most dangerous weapon is running back Robert Henry Jr., who trampled the Aggies for 177 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Texas State’s ground game is led by running back Lincoln Pare, who ran for 167 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries against Eastern Michigan. Fellow back Greg Burrell also recorded 79 yards and a touchdown on seven rushes.

4Q, 8:08 — Texas State 43, UTSA 36

Huge play by Texas State, as McCown’s fourth down pass is tipped, leading to Amador dropping the conversion. The Bobcats take over on downs.

4Q, 10:08 — Texas State 43, UTSA 36

And immediately, Texas State strikes back. Jackson hits Sparks in stride on the first play of the following drive for a 65-yard touchdown. These offenses are unstoppable right now.

4Q, 10:22 — Texas State 36, UTSA 36

UTSA makes its way to the 50-yard line without trouble before Kenard Snyder sacks McCown on second down. Henry is stuffed on third down, and the Roadrunners prepare to go for the conversion. McCown makes a big throw to David Amador II to move the chains, and Henry collects his third touchdown of the day on a 29-yard run. The two-point conversion to McCuin is good.

4Q, 14:11 — Texas State 36, UTSA 28

UTSA is called for another pass interference penalty, giving Texas State first and goal. Justin DeLeon is in for Lockette. Jackson finds his second rushing touchdown of the day from six yards out.

Texas State’s defense locks in after a 21-yard rush by Henderson. The Roadrunners risk a fourth-down attempt on the Bobcats’ 43-yard line, but McCown’s pass is too high.

Texas State takes over on downs. Jackson attempts a throw to wide receiver Kylen Evans that draws pass interference on the defense. Jackson finds Pare over the middle for a third-down conversion, putting the Bobcats on the Roadrunners’ 24-yard line. Lockette limps off the field after a 16-yard rush by Jackson, but offsetting penalties reset the down. 

3Q, 4:24 — Texas State 29, UTSA 28

Texas State’s offense takes a 10-yard loss after a holding call on Lockette. A 12 men on the field penalty gives the Bobcats some yardage back and Jackson completes another huge pass to Dawn, putting Texas State on the opposing 24-yard line. 

UTSA tackles Pare for a loss on third down. Robles hits the 38-yard field goal.

3Q, 7:36 — UTSA 28, Texas State 26 

UTSA’s offense is moving now, making its way into Texas State territory on three plays. Candan Grogan breaks up a deep pass to McCuin. On the 30-yard line, McCown keeps it and rushes for 22 yards. After Henry rushes for three yards, McCown finds the running back again for a four-yard touchdown pass. 

3Q, 11:35 — Texas State 26, UTSA 21

Pare finds a big rush of his own, darting to the right for a 28-yard gain. The Bobcats miss on a fourth-down pass, but a pass interference call on the Roadrunners gives them life. Jenkins finishes off the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run.

3Q, 14:44 — UTSA 21,  Texas State 19

UTSA starts the third quarter off with a bang. Henry rips off a 75-yard touchdown run, and UTSA takes the lead for the first time this game. The crowd is back in this.

Texas State makes its way to the 33-yard line with three seconds left in the quarter. Texas State kicker Tyler Robles attempts the 50-yard field goal and nails it as time expires.

2Q, :37 — Texas State 16, UTSA 14

UTSA running back Will Henderson III finds his way into Texas State territory on a 23-yard rush. McCown finds another first down on a pass to tight end Houston Thomas, putting UTSA on the 10-yard line. On the five-yard line, UTSA dupes Texas State’s defense into thinking it’s a run play, and McCown finds wide receiver DJ Allen wide open in the end zone.

2Q, 4:04 — Texas State 16, UTSA 7

Tough drive from Texas State, who give the ball back with a quick three-and-out. UTSA takes over at its own 20-yard line. Texas State’s defense forces another punt after a third-down stop.

Jackson finds Dawn down the right side of the field for a 53-yard gain. Two consecutive carries by running back Jaylen Jenkins, and Texas State has one more down to gain eight yards. Jackson runs it in himself, giving the Bobcats their second touchdown of the day. Texas State offensive lineman Tellek Lockette is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. 

2Q, 9:02 — Texas State 9, UTSA 7

McCown converts a first down on a 16-yard pass to McCuin. Texas State declines a holding penalty on second down, bringing up 3rd and 10. McCown scrambles out of the pocket for a conversion. The UTSA signal caller completes a 13-yard pass for a first down, and a roughing the passer penalty tacks on 15 yards to the end of the play. After another completion, UTSA running back A’Marion Peterson barrels in for a touchdown.

Jackson hits Sparks for a 73-yard completion up the right sideline, giving Texas State a first down on the 11-yard line. The Bobcats make it to the one-yard line and go for it on fourth down. Pare somersaults over the offensive line for the conversion. Pare rushes for the touchdown on his second attempt.

A much lower-scoring affair than was initially predicted. Both defenses have come to play, and Jackson hasn’t looked especially clean thus far. The Texas State offense will start the second quarter on its own 16-yard line.

Stuck on the one-yard line, an 11-yard Jackson run gives Texas State some breathing room. The Bobcats’ next series of runs fails to make it 10 yards, and David Nunez boots a punt 39 yards.

UTSA’s offense begins at its own 39-yard line. After a first down incompletion, Henry flashes some of his explosiveness on an 11-yard run. A false start pushes the Roadrunners back, and they are forced to punt after a short pass to Henry.

McCown capitalizes on the turnover with a 42-yard pass to wide receiver Devin McCuin, placing UTSA on the eight-yard line. The Texas State defense forces UTSA to third down, and a pass to tight end Dan Dishman falls just short of the endzone. The Texas State run defense holds steady on fourth and short, forcing a turnover on downs.

Bobcats start their next offensive drive with four straight runs. Notably, running back Torrance Burgess Jr. was the second back to enter the game after Pare. On third down in UTSA territory, Jackson faces heavy pressure and throws the first pick of his career. UTSA takes over at its own 48-yard line.

A first down run by UTSA running back Robert Henry goes for three yards. Quarterback Owen McCown scrambles for another three on second down but gets taken down hard by Texas State edge Kalil Alexander. Texas State comes out of the gate with a slightly underthrown deep shot from Jackson to wide receiver Beau Sparks, which falls incomplete.
