Brian Robinson Jr. figures to play an integral role in the 49ers’ offense this season, but the transition into a new scheme is a tough hurdle to overcome in such a short period of time.

The veteran back explained how he’s absorbing San Francisco’s playbook entering the 49ers’ Week 1 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

“Just taking it day by day,” Robinson told reporters earlier this week. “Obviously, the playbook is pretty big and just doing everything I can to just dive right into it and learn all the information I need to know going into the game week. I feel like I’m in a pretty good spot as far as learning the playbook for where we’re at to start the season.”

Robinson clarified that the challenge lies with memorizing the sheer size of the playbook rather than any difficulties adapting to the scheme itself.

“Nothing has been difficult about it. It’s just about learning and retaining the information,” Robinson explained. “It’s a lot of plays in there so obviously I don’t expect to have the playbook in full in one week but constantly making that progress every day to get there.

“I’m working on just getting everything down. I need to know the run game, passing game and protection, I need to know. That’s all a part of being a running back. That’s all a part of my responsibility so it’s not one specific thing. I’m trying my best to learn everything as a whole because in the end game I got to know everything so just doing my part to learn as fast as I can.”

Robinson was acquired via trade from the Washington Commanders last month to bolster the 49ers’ running back depth, a move that could prove crucial as superstar starter Christian McCaffrey already has an injury designation before the regular season begins.

The fourth-year running back hasa recorded 2,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground in three NFL seasons after being drafted No. 98 overall by Washington in 2022.

Robinson averaged 4.3 yards per carry on 187 rushing attempts during the 2024 NFL season, and now is positioned to record another efficient season while splitting carries with McCaffrey.
