Commanders General Manager Grades Offseason Moves

There was an obvious plan that the Washington Commanders wanted to push this offseason following their shocking run to the NFC Championship Game in January.

Build around Jayden Daniels.

The Offensive Rookie of the Year helped Washington go through a nine-win turnaround – one of the largest in NFL history from 2023 to 2024. Along the way, he won two playoff games and had the Commanders thinking Super Bowl for the first time in decades.

To general manager Adam Peters, the decision to bolster the offensive line with players like Laremy Tunsil, as well as receiver with Deebo Samuel, provided a clear defense for Daniels going into his sophomore year.

“It was both, really. I think, in the offseason, when we had the opportunity to get Tunsil, which doesn’t come around that often to get a blue-chip left tackle, one of the best tackles in the league, so we felt that was an opportunity we didn’t want to pass up,” Peters said on the Pat McAfee Show.

“We want to protect Jayden, he’s the cornerstone of our franchise, and we want to make sure we’re protecting him.”

It’s kind of a no-brainer for a team like Washington that has struggled to find their franchise quarterback for decades now.

Protecting Daniels with a quality offensive line is just part of the battle, though. While he excelled throughout the playoffs, the team did take a stumble on the defensive side of the ball.

And there’s only so much the offense can do in shootouts.

Whetever the case, though, the Commanders continue to build around the likes of Daniels in the hopes he can deliver a fourth Super Bowl title to the nation’s capital.
