The San Francisco 49ers kick off their quest to return to the postseason with an NFC West showdown against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

All signs pointed toward the 49ers being mostly healthy entering Sunday’s contest. Then Christian McCaffrey showed up on the practice participation report with a calf injury that limited him Thursday and kept him out of Friday’s session. He’s officially questionable entering the game.

The good news for San Francisco is Jauan Jennings is back from a calf injury and was a full go in Friday’s practice. He’s expected to suit up with a new contract that can earn him up to an extra $3 million.

Last season the 49ers stumbled early in the year and never recovered en route to a 6-11 finish. This season they’ll be looking to get off to a fast start overall and in the NFC West.

Given how much time cornerback Upton Stout and defensive end Mykel Williams missed, it’s hard to envision both of them hitting the ground running at a high level. If they’re weak links in the 49ers’ defense, San Francisco could have a hard time slowing down Seattle’s offense. If Christian McCaffrey is limited or out, it could cause problems for the 49ers’ offense as well. It would be impressive if the 49ers could pull out a win amid that adversity. If McCaffrey can play, he’ll most certainly start. If he winds up sitting out Sunday’s game, Brian Robinson will get the start, but Isaac Guerendo could shoulder some significant workload as well.
