“Kyle, when you say there’s no question about Jake Moody’s job security, why is that?”

San Francisco fans don’t need a history lesson on their embattled place kicker Jake Moody.

Moody was a key source of the fan’s ire in 2024 as he missed 10-of-20 field goal tries from longer than 40 yards in 2024. On Sunday, Moody got off to another rough start in 2025.

Moody doinked a chip-shot 27-yard field goal try and then his 36-yard try was blocked late in the third quarter. With the 49ers trailing Seattle 10-7 on the ensuing San Francisco drive in the fourth quarter, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan elected to go on 4th-and-2 from the Seattle 14-yard-line in a conventional kicking situation.

Moody did wind up tying the game with a 32-yard make.

But, after the 49ers picked up a dramatic 17-13 win over Seattle, those familiar questions surrounding Moody emerged. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if Moody was in any danger of not being back on the team following the win.

“No. No question,” Shanahan said.

Asked a follow-up about why there’s no question about Moody’s job security, Shanahan gave a different response.

“Just the way you guys ask it. Right now, I have no question. I’m trying to finish today and then I’ll get on the plane, evaluate stuff and go back at it.

“You guys can ask me every day, and I’ll answer how I am right at that moment,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan admitted he was disappointed with the chip-shot try, but placed the blame on the overall operation on the blocked field goal.

“Well, obviously I was disappointed that we missed two field goals. I mean, missed one, which was a big miss, especially I think we were inside the 10. I want to say it was a 27-yarder.

“And then, the next one, (Julian) Love made a hell of a move. I think it was Love. Splitting that D gap, looked like he jumped over the guys. I saw it on the scoreboard. But, we’ve got to clean up that protection. That’s everyone there. That one wasn’t Jake. That’s just the whole operation, but, yeah, we got to do better,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan said Moody’s miss and the blocked kick didn’t lead to the 49ers’ fourth-down decision-making.

“I don’t think so. I want to say they were fourth-and-two, so I don’t think that changed it. I mean, would’ve kicked it if it was more than that,” Shanahan said.

Ultimately, Shanahan was just pleased to get out of Seattle with a season-opening win.

“I was just so happy with our team. There was a lot of adversity in that game that we had to overcome offense, defense, special teams. A number of injuries, those two turnovers. Being able to get two to even it out and still find a way to win, I was real proud of our team.

“That was our first game together. I didn’t like everything, but I liked how our guys played, I liked the attitude. They never wavered. I expect us to get better as we go,” Shanahan said.
