Colter Hegge, Lake City Football

LAKE CITY, Minn. (KTTC) – In a Friday night contest with La Crescent-Hokah, Lake City allowed a flurry of points before halftime to fall behind.

“By the end of the first half we were down 20-19,” Lake City football head coach Trevor Narum said.

The team needed a spark.

“My coach told me we needed someone to be there when were going out for that first drive,” Lake City senior quarterback Colter Hegge said. “So I went out there, I tried to be a big leader for our team and just start it. And the second half just kind of went boom.”

Boom, indeed. The Tigers outscored the Lancers 42 to 8 over the final two quarters to win 61-28. Hegge finished with six total touchdowns — a perfect snapshot of what he brings to Lake City football.

“Leadership, intensity, and a lot of athleticism, and a lot of skill, and a lot of talent,” Narum said.

Five scores on the ground, one through the air. But to Hegge, his do-it-all game is all about his teammates.

“I know that if my line wasn’t there, I wouldn’t have done anything, and if my wide receivers and slots and running backs weren’t there, they would’ve been only focusing on me and I would’ve done nothing,” Hegge said. “I’m very proud of my team for what they did and very grateful for them.”

The senior QB has grown into that leadership role off the field, but on the field he’s always played the game the same enthusiastic way.

“He’s a very passionate kid, he wears his heart on his sleeve, so that’s really, really fun to watch and fun to coach,” Narum said.

The passion is on display year-round. Hegge also plays basketball and baseball, three sports united by one drive.

“I’m a very competitive guy,” he said. “I do not want to lose at all. I mean, obviously with me being a three-sport athlete I do not want to lose and I’m very competitive.”

That same drive is why even though he plans to play baseball at the next level, he wants to leave it all on the football field.

“I don’t want the football team to be like, ‘oh he just wants to play baseball somewhere.’ No, I want to play for these guys too,” he said. “I’m not on that aspect of my life yet. I just really want to play hard for these guys the last eight, nine, 10 games, however many games we’ve got left.”
