Could the Washington Commanders be without punter Tress Way on Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers?

In Sunday’s Week 1 win over the New York Giants, Way had a punt blocked and was knocked to the ground. Washington’s X page reported a back injury and said he was questionable to return. Fortunately for the Commanders, it was later in the game.

On Monday, the Commanders did not practice but held a walkthrough. So, the team issued an injury report, which was an estimation if the team had a standard practice. Way was listed as a DNP (did not participate) with a back injury.

Those who say it’s “only a punter” may not understand how vital a quality punter is. Way has been Washington’s punter since 2014. He doesn’t miss time. He always delivers, and he’s also the team’s holder. Don’t underestimate the importance of that job, too.

And on Thursday, the Commanders are facing a top NFC contender in what could be a defensive battle. Do you know what’s important in a defensive struggle? Field position. Way has always been an MVP for the Commanders with his booming leg and ability to down the ball inside the 20-yard line. Losing Way for Thursday’s game would be an underratedly brutal blow because he wears many hats, and it’s expected to be a close game. One play on special teams — good or bad — could determine the outcome.

Don’t be surprised if Washington signs a punter to the practice squad this week and takes Way’s playing decision up until gametime on Thursday. By signing a punter for the practice squad, he can get some reps in as the punter and holder.
