Stats show that the 49ers got a pretty good replacement for now-waived kicker Jake Moody — in fact, the team signed one of the best field-goal kickers of all time.
San Francisco brought in veteran Eddy Piñeiro for a workout after cutting Moody on Tuesday and will sign him to a contract, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. The moves brings on a kicker with one of the best field-goal percentages in NFL history (since 1938), per Pro Football Reference.
Here is where Piñeiro’s career field-goal percentage ranks all-time among the NFL’s top 10:

The 49ers waived Moody on Tuesday after his 2024 struggles continued into the new NFL season during San Francisco’s Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Since the 49ers drafted him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Moody posted a career 74.2 field-goal percentage (84 percent in 2023; 70.6 percent in 2024; 33.3 percent through one game in 2025).
Looking at numbers alone, it’s clear Piñeiro is a step up. In 70 career games, the 29-year-old has made 111 of 126 field-goal attempts and 116 of 126 extra-point attempts (92.1 percent).
Now, the new 49ers kicker will be put to the test in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
