On Tuesday, September 9, news broke that Philadelphia Eagles pass-rusher Jalen Carter would be eligible to play against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 after retroactively serving a what was expected to be a one-game suspension for a spitting incident involving Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Carter, who was ejected on the first play of Philadelphia’s season-opener against Dallas after expectorating on Prescott, will pay a $57,222 fine — equivalent to one of the former Georgia Bulldog’s game checks.

Fans and pundits speculated about Carter’s disposition for the Eagles’ Week 2 matchup against Kansas City, and were surprised that the NFL would let him off with such a lenient punishment.

The league’s reasoning for the baffling Carter decision seems to be predicated on the idea that the Eagles star had functionally served his suspension after missing the lion’s share of Philadelphia’s Week 1 contest against the Cowboys.

One has to wonder what the reaction to such a settlement would be in a hypothetical scenario that would see a similar saga transpire in the Chiefs’ favor.
