The Cincinnati Bengals have had recent communication with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Hendrickson led the NFL in sacks last season with 17.5.

Rapoport provided an update about negotiations between the two sides during an appearance Thursday on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“I think that was by design that everything went quiet,” Rapoport said. “He made his point, I think it was received, very received. There has been some communication between the Bengals and Trey Hendrickson since that interview, since the draft, like there have been talks. (Cincinnati) picked Shemar Stewart off the edge. I think (Hendrickson) understands that. I think they want to do a deal. Now, I would never rule out a trade, because it’s the NFL. And as we learned yesterday, trades could happen literally at any moment … But I think they want to keep him. I think they’re gonna make moves toward – they haven’t yet. The Bengals sometimes function maybe differently, maybe a little slower than some organizations, but they do want to keep him and do a deal.”

During an appearance on McAfee’s show in early April, Hendrickson acknowledged frustration and disappointment over what he called poor communication with the Bengals during negotiations for a long-term contract.
