THOMASTON — The Spalding Jaguars lost a challenging region game against Upson-Lee on Friday night with a score of 15-6 in Matthews Field. The Jags switched up the offense by moving their star running back Camauri Berry to the quarterback position. With Berry scoring the only touchdown of the game for the Jags, head coach Nick Davis felt Berry did some things really well.

“I thought we did some things differently as we put Camauri Berry at quarterback, as he did some counters and jet sweeps that allowed us to get our athletes in space,” Davis said. “It worked really well for us. However, now, it limits us in the passing game as he continues to work and improve on that phase.”

The Jags’ defense played very hard. However, key mistakes were costly in the game and significantly impacted the outcome.

“Defensively, I thought we were as physically aggressive as we had been,” Davis said. “We had three pass inferences and an offside on a critical third down as we got off the field six times on 11 total third downs. If we could have gotten off the field the other times, it would’ve been the difference in the game.”

This week of practice hasn’t been the best thus far as the team tries to rebound from a tough loss. They still have a few days to turn things around at practice as they prepare to play at home for the first time in three weeks.

“We’ve got to pick up our energy as it’s not where it needs to be on Monday and Tuesday. We just talked about some things at the end of practice, and hopefully, we will come back and have a better day,” Davis said. “Last week was a real high-energy ball game for us, and we must learn how to handle that. Like I told them last Friday we can’t let that lost carry over into another lost this week. We got to change our mindset, as the good thing is we have a couple more days before we play, as we get our energy back up.”

It will be another region game for the Jags as they face Trinity Christian School on Friday night.

“Trinity Christian is an excellent ball club as they are not going to beat themselves as they are going to play extremely hard,” Davis said. “We are going to eliminate the mistakes we made last week, and if we don’t, we are going to have issues. They are very athletic at the receiver position, as the quarterback has an excellent job mentality with the timing of his throws.

“They have a powerful running back with good speed, so we must cut down on those guys. They play extremely hard on defense as they don’t miss many tackles. When we get an opportunity to pop one, we must make it happen.”
