Leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys reached agreement on a trade to send quarterback Joe Milton from the AFC East to the NFC South. Milton, originally a sixth-round draft pick by the Patriots last spring, was sent to Dallas alongside a seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a fifth-rounder.
The picks involved were No. 171 coming to New England as well as No. 217 going to Dallas. With those two selections now invested by their respective teams, we can take a look at the final tally of the trade.
Patriots trade results
The Patriots decided to trade out of the 171st overall pick when they were on the clock late in Round 5. Sliding back 11 spots in a trade with the Detroit Lions, they picked up an extra seventh-rounder at No. 228. They then invested that pick to facilitate another trade-down, adding another extra selection to the mix.
K Andres Borregales (via Pick No. 182)
LS Julian Ashby (via Pick No. 251)
CB Kobee Minor (via Pick No. 257)
Following their trade-down out of the fifth round, the Patriots added some competition to their kicker room. The first kicker off the board, Andres Borregales out of Miami was the consensus top option available this year. He will now go up against former practice squad member John Parker Romo for the right to take over the role last held by Joey Slye.
The other two selections were turned into long snapper Julian Ashby and cornerback Kobee Minor, the latter of whom being the Mr. Irrelevant of this year’s draft.
Cowboys trade results
QB Joe Milton II
DL Jay Toia (via Pick No. 217)
Besides picking up Milton, the Cowboys also added a rotational defensive lineman to the mix. Jay Toia is a spacer-eater up front, who stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs a massive 342 pounds; he will compete for a roster spot as an early-down nose tackle.
Who won the trade?
Needless to say, there is no telling yet who got the better of the trade. None of the players brought in by their respective teams project as roster locks at the moment, even though it appears one of them — new Patriots kicker Andres Borregales — has the clearest path toward playing time in 2025.
Still, the big unknown is Joe Milton. If he develops into a serviceable quarterback, and if it is only as a backup, Dallas would probably be quite happy with how its relatively modest investment turned out.
