GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers had a discouraging first performance of the season, a 26-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Playing the Arizona Cardinals could be exactly what they need to get back on track.

Former Premier League stars could make the difference in the Asian Champions League that begins Monday. Ivan Toney, Jesse Lingard, Riyad Mahrez and Darwin Nunez all have a chance of winning Asian soccer’s premier club tournament. Saudi clubs dominated last season, providing three of the semifinalists before Al-Ahli won the final in front of 60,000 spectators at Jeddah in May. Since the country’s Public Investment Fund took over the leading clubs, including Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, in 2023, Saudi Pro League clubs have spent around $1.5 billion on players.

Russians still banned as the track and field world championships open in Tokyo

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe says that Russian athletes will not be allowed to compete at the world championships that open Saturday in Tokyo. The head of World Athletics repeated the governing body’s position on Friday. Russians competed in some disciplines as neutral athletes last year at the Paris Olympics, and they’ve been allowed in world championships in various sports — also as neutrals. But not in track and field.

Sha’Carri Richardson needed time, and she got it. Slowed since the start of the year by an injury, the nature of which she has not disclosed, track’s most charismatic, enigmatic sprinter will try to defend her world title at 100 meters this week at a world championships that have been pushed to the tail-end of the sport’s calendar. She heads to Tokyo not as a favorite, but rather, as a runner who hasn’t broken 11 seconds this year and could very well be the sport’s biggest question mark. Her first race is set for Saturday with the 100-meter finals scheduled Sunday night.

The Philadelphia Union come into a matchup with the Vancouver Whitecaps after notching two straight shutout wins.

Saint Louis City SC visits CF Montreal looking to stop a nine-game road losing streak.

The New York Red Bulls visit the Portland Timbers looking to end a three-game road slide.

The San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles FC square off in conference action.

The Chicago Fire host New York City FC in Eastern Conference play.

Dallas faces Austin after playing to a draw in three consecutive games.

Gabriel Cordeiro Pirani leads D.C. United into a matchup with Orlando City after scoring two goals against New York City FC.

Rookie pinch-hitter Harry Ford drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-6 to move into a tie with Houston atop the AL West. It was the second straight walk-off victory in extra innings for the Mariners, who extended their win streak to six games. Leo Rivas hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning Wednesday night to complete a series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mike Trout launched his 399th career home run for the Angels, tying it 4-all in the fifth inning after they fell behind 4-0 in the second. J.P. Crawford had three RBIs for the Mariners, including a tying single in the 11th.

From a start-up track league that didn’t pay its runners to the inability of the sport to put its best athletes on the track at the same time and place, track and field begins its world championships looking disorganized. The Olympics in Los Angeles, and a chance to capture the world’s imagination, are three years away, but there remain big questions about whether the sport is positioned to capture the momentum.

CHICAGO (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 24 points, Rebekah Gardner had 15 and Emma Messemann added 14 as the New York Liberty beat the Chicago Sky 91-86 on Thursday night.

SAN DIEGO — The season had gotten a little green for the San Diego Padres. As in, the color of one’s countenance when feeling ill.

Harry Wilson’s Wallabies are experiencing a new vibe in the Rugby Championship. After regaining the faith of Australian supporters, they’re set to face Argentina on Saturday with fans expecting a win. The Sydney Football Stadium sold out quickly. The Wallabies have started winning more regularly again, and last weekend’s thriller in Townsville avenged their biggest test rugby loss ever a year earlier in Argentina. Pumas head coach Felipe Contepomi made three changes to his starting lineup and says his squad has “reset from zero” after last week’s late loss — just like it had following last month’s upset victory over the All Blacks.

Jackson Merrill homered and Randy Vásquez struck out a career-high nine in six strong innings for the San Diego Padres, who beat the last-place Colorado Rockies 2-0 to open a four-game series. The Padres pulled within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and opened a four-game lead over the New York Mets for the second of three National League wild cards. The Padres were coming off a home series loss to Cincinnati and won for just the fourth time in 11 games.

Commanders RB Austin Ekeler suffers Achilles tendon injury in fourth quarter vs. Packers

He was helped off the field without putting any weight on his right leg and sat on the bench for a few minutes before he was driven away. This is the 30-year-old Ekeler’s second season with Washington after seven with the Los Angeles Chargers. He had 367 yards rushing and 366 yards receiving last season.

The Demon Deacons also got rushing scores from Demond Claiborne and Robby Ashford. N.C. State is 3-0 for the first time since 2022.

NEW YORK — Aaron Judge keeps rising up the Yankees ’ all-time home run list.

Aaron Judge hit two home runs to tie Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio for fourth place in Yankees history as New York beat the Detroit Tigers 9-3 to avert a three-game sweep. On the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Donald Trump attended the game and watched from a suite on the third base side.
