PHOENIX (AZFamily/AP) — The Arizona Cardinals are hoping to start the season 2-0 as they host the Carolina Panthers in their home opener this Sunday.
The Panthers have dominated the Cardinals over the past decade, winning seven of the past eight matchups. However, the Red Birds will look to build on top of a 20-13 win over the New Orleans Saints, led by quarterback Kyler Murray.
A familiar face will also make his return to Arizona — Carolina wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. The No. 8 overall pick played for the Arizona Wildcats and finished as the school’s all-time leader in yards receiving. In his NFL debut, McMillan recorded five catches for 68 yards and is quickly working to establish himself as a top target for quarterback Bryce Young.
A Cardinals player to watch in this matchup will be cornerback Will Johnson. The rookie made his presence felt during the season opener, laying a huge hit on Saints receiver Chris Olave.
Another key matchup will be Young and Cardinals safety Budda Baker. Panthers coach Dave Canales said his offensive game plan revolves in part around where Baker is on the field. Meanwhile, Young is coming off a rough first outing in Week 1 with three turnovers in the 26-10 loss to the Jaguars.
Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. at State Farm Stadium.
