The Cincinnati Bengals offense was ugly in its Week 1 debut this year.

It didn’t seem that way at first, not with Joe Burrow’s offense firing out of the gates and seeming to have finally navigated around those tricky slow starts to seasons.

But after the early touchdown drive, Burrow finished with just 113 passing yards and the Bengals lucked into a few missed kicks, assisting them in a one-point win. Star wideout Ja’Marr Chase ended the day with 26 yards on two catches.

But Chase told reporters ahead of Week 2 that things will get better.

“We left a little bit of plays out there, I want to say,” Chase said. “Could have capitalized on more plays and made it a little easier on our defense not to put them in a tough spot at the end of the game. So, that’s definitely on offense, on us.”

One would have to think Chase is right. Beyond sheer reps in live action tightening things up, an offensive line now starting Dalton Risner at guard will have more cohesiveness. And as we always mention, it doesn’t hurt that they don’t see Myles Garrett again, too.

Granted, Burrow has struggled in most home openers over the years. But if there’s a time to change that, it’s now against a beatable opponent after escaping with a win one week ago, especially after the first normal training camp of Burrow’s career to date.
