The Seattle Seahawks recently announced that the NFL franchise would continue to have undercover police officers wearing opposing teams’ jerseys at home games this season to identify troublemakers at Lumen Field.

The NFC West division-rival Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed this week to The Arizona Republic that state police have worn football jerseys and apparel to blend in with the crowd at Cardinals home games since State Farm Stadium opened in 2006. The Cardinals host the Carolina Panthers in their home opener at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14.

“We traditionally use undercover officers who dress as typical football fans would during each of our home games in Cardinals Stadium,” DPS spokesperson Bart Graves told The Republic.

“This has been our practice since the Cardinals Stadium opened. It began as a way to enforce a code of conduct for the fans and ultimately to keep everyone safe. It has worked out very well. The officers may wear Cardinals jerseys and other teams’ gear and may not wear any sports team shirts.”

DPS handles all crime inside the stadium.

The Glendale Police Department patrols the parking lots.

“We handle traffic enforcement and anything outside and surrounding areas,” Glendale PD spokesperson Jose Santiago told The Republic.

Cardinals spokesperson Mark Dalton also confirmed that undercover police officers wear football jerseys at the stadium and told The Republic that this season “there is also an increased presence of undercover officers policing underage drinking …”

“Both underage individuals attempting to purchase alcohol, as well as individuals of legal age purchasing and passing off to underage drinkers.”

State Farm Stadium was recently ranked the 15th-most dangerous NFL stadium out of 30, or middle-of-the-pack, by Sportsbook Review, which based its rankings on crime stats from every stadium’s home city, combined with responses from a poll of more than 3,000 NFL fans.

Among Arizona’s division rivals, the Seahawks’ Lumen Field was ranked the eighth-most dangerous NFL stadium, the Los Angeles Rams’ SoFi Stadium was ranked 11th and the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium was ranked 16th.

The Baltimore Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium was ranked most dangerous. The Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium was ranked least dangerous.
