He may have been the talk of relentless trade rumors and predictions throughout the last several months, but if Breece Hall continues to play like he did in Week 1, the New York Jets won’t be shipping the star running back anywhere.

In New York’s 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Hall recorded over 140 yards of total offense while averaging over five yards per carry and over six yards per touch. The performance had fans wondering if the running back was back to being one of the elite players at the position despite a couple of down years.

Going into Week 2, though, Hall understands that the offense as a whole left opportunities on the field, and that’s all he’s concerned with right now.

“I felt we left like 10 more points out there,” Hall explained, per the Jets’ official transcripts. “[Offensively], we have a standard. Regardless [of whether] we win 6-3 [or by a larger margin], we want to go out there and put our best foot forward.”

As Hall and the Jets offense prepare for an AFC East showdown against the Buffalo Bills, the team may have caught a break in one regard.

Simply put, the Jets’ offensive dynamo is ready to exploit that on Sunday.

Breece Hall is looking for more in Week 2

The loss of Ed Oliver to an injury cannot be understated for the Buffalo Bills. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle recorded a sack and was the team’s best player in their 41-40 win over the Baltimore Ravens last week.

With Oliver on the field, Buffalo was competitive against Baltimore’s excellent rushing scheme. When he wasn’t out there, though, the Ravens gashed the Bills throughout the contest—even though they ended up losing the game.

Oliver’s injury changes the entire complexion of Sunday’s contest for the Jets.

Buffalo gave up over 200 yards rushing to the Ravens last week. New York, running a similar scheme, knows it’ll have chances to really control the game at the line of scrimmage.

“He’s (Oliver) a game changer,” Hall said. “We’re going to have to take advantage with him not out there.”

Even with Oliver out and slot cornerback Taron Johnson banged up, the Bills still pose a threat on defense. Hall says a big part of that is their chemistry, which is among the best in the league.

“They’ve been together for a while,” Hall said. “They have a bend but don’t break (attitude). They don’t make a ton of mistakes. Whoever is going to be the most physical and disciplined unit will put up the most points.”

There is something to be said about keeping a unit together for as long as possible in the salary cap era. The chemistry and connection grow over time, and little infighting happens when things go wrong.

It’s one of the many reasons the Bills have been so successful in the AFC East after Tom Brady’s retirement.

If Breece Hall can lead the New York Jets on the ground with the same kind of success as he did last week, all the chemistry in the world won’t help the Buffalo Bills—particularly without Ed Oliver on the field.
