You won’t find many surprises on the list of last-minute New Orleans Saints roster moves this week. The Saints filed their usual two practice squad elevations ahead of Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49erse, along with a couple of other procedural moves. But let’s get into each transaction and what they mean for Week 2.
DE Jonah Williams promoted to the 53-man roster
This was previously reported, and now it’s official. Williams was a practice squad call-up last week but now he’s on the 53-man roster outright, and he should be active for Sunday’s matchup. He’s a big defensive lineman at 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds, and his ability to line up at several different spots is valuable.

S Julian Blackmon placed on injured reserve
We expected this given head coach Kellen Moore’s comments earlier in the week. Blackmon suffered a shoulder injury last Sunday that required surgery, and while there’s an outside chance he could return late in the year, it’s likely ending his season. That’s a really tough break for a veteran player who was doing well.
S Terrell Burgess elevated for Week 2
Burgess is one of two players coming up from the practice squad for this 49ers game. He was playing well over the summer until a minor injury sidelined him during the preseason. The Saints gave him time to heal up, and now he’ll get to show what he can do. They can elevate Burgess two more times like this before being forced to promote him.

DE Fadil Diggs elevated for Week 2
It’s a minor swap for Diggs, who was on the 53-man roster last week but is coming up from the practice squad now. He’ll round out the pass-rush rotation with Chase Young still on the mend. The rookie seventh-round pick needs to make some plays given his low snap count.
WR Ja’Lynn Polk trade processed
New Orleans announced the completed trade for Polk, the former New England Patriots second-round pick who is out for the year with a shoulder injury. Polk gets to step into a new opportunity after healing up while the Saints get a player they would’ve drafted last year if given the chance. He’ll remain on injured reserve, so we won’t see him until 2026.
