It’s a small surprise that the primary injury drama for the San Francisco 49ers leading up to Week 2 did not revolve around running back Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey made it through training camp healthy, but then showed up on the 49ers’ practice report as a limited participant the Thursday before the season opener. Then he missed Friday’s practice and was questionable with a calf injury. Not only did McCaffrey play in the team’s Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks, he posted 31 touches − his most since Week 15 of the 2022 season.

Despite that, there wasn’t much happening on the injury front for the 49ers’ RB leading up to a Week 2 matchup with the New Orleans Saints. However, there were injury problems elsewhere with quarterback Brock Purdy out, and two other offensive starters listed as questionable.

Here’s everything we know about McCaffrey’s Week 2 status:

Christian McCaffrey injury update

McCaffrey showed up as a non-participant on the practice participation report to open Week 2. The team listed him with a calf injury, but they also noted he was off for a veteran rest day. Signs pointed to the calf not being an issue, however, since he was a full participant in Thursday and Friday’s sessions.

Will Christian McCaffrey play vs. New Orleans Saints?

After missing Wednesday’s practice, McCaffrey was not on the injury report for Sunday’s game. That means he’ll be good to go barring an unforeseen change during the team’s travel to New Orleans or during pregame warmups.

What Kyle Shanahan said about Christian McCaffrey’s injury update

There wasn’t much to say for Shanahan during the week. The last thing we heard from the head coach on his star running back was in his Monday conference call with reporters when he said there was nothing to report on McCaffrey after he got 31 touches in the 49ers’ season opening win.

Who will start for the 49ers if Christian McCaffrey is out?

If for some reason McCaffrey isn’t able to go, or if he gets hurt during the game, Brian Robinson will step up into the No. 1 RB role. Isaac Guerendo should also be good to carry some of the workload. Rookie RB Jordan James is also not on the injury report after dealing with a broken finger that required surgery.
