The Buffalo Bills have spent the past handful of seasons atop their division, building momentum as a Super Bowl contender.
Their AFC East rival Jets, meanwhile, have been a team at the bottom of that division, and this season they are trying to climb their way up out of it.
And this week, that will mean facing the Bills in the first matchup in the division this season.
The only team from New York is hitting the road, traveling to New Jersey, and looking to improve to 2-0, and new head coach, Aaron Glenn, and his Jets squad are standing in their way.
With that, here are 3 keys to a Bills victory in NFL Week 2…
Eat In The Passing Game
Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers carved up and picked apart the Jets’ secondary last week, with Jets corner Sauce Gardner being the lone standout to have a good game.
While Rodgers is a four-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl-winning quarterback, he’s also nearing the end of his playing career, while Bills QB Josh Allen has just entered his prime.
Allen put up almost 400 passing yards against the Ravens in week 1, and is also historically good in play action, which Rodgers got the best of the Jets’ pass defense with in the red zone.Â
With Gang Green’s secondary struggling, and Buffalo offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s efficiency distribution and yards-after-catch make the most of your opportunities, the Bills’ offense has a chance to execute successfully, if not at a high level.
Keep Pace On Offense
Allen hasn’t had the worst luck at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but it would certainly be another sign that he and the Bills have reached a new level of play in his career if he had another strong performance.
The Bills’ captain has 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 13 games against the Jets, averaging 226 passing yards, 6 touchdowns (Three passing, three rushing), and 5 interceptions in his last three games in the Meadowlands.Â
It’s another early opportunity to make an early-season statement through clean, efficient, high-level execution and put the AFC on notice that the Bills are playing determined football. And another opportunity for Allen to show an AFC East foe they can’t contain him.
Improve Executing a Similar Defensive Game Plan
Last week, the Bills’ defense prepared to face a run-heavy offense with a mobile quarterback and WR1, with a good pass rush. This week, they’ll do the same.
While Justin Fields is a young quarterback and not at the tier of Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, Jets WR1 Garrett Wilson is a higher-tier talent than Baltimore’s top pass catcher against Buffalo, Zay Flowers. And while RB Bryce Hall is not the Ravens’ Derrick Henry, he did put up 107 yards on the ground backed by 48 from Fields against Pittsburgh.
On the Bills’ side, their secondary struggled to contain Flowers, and the defense allowed 169 yards rushing to Henry, with Jackson adding 70 yards as well, and as a team, the Ravens averaged 8.2 yards per carry. In all, Buffalo gave up a league-high 238 rushing yards in the game; meanwhile, the Jets logged the fourth-most rushing yards in Week 1 (182 yards).
Buffalo will be without their biggest defensive difference maker from last week, who caused Henry to fumble on Baltimore’s final possession. Ed Oliver injured his ankle in practice when his foot was stepped on. Rookie tackle T.J. Sanders, the secondary, and the rest of the Bills’ defense will need to improve on executing against a similar offense as a key to victory.
