COLUMBIA, MD (WBFF) — The Baltimore Ravens are brightening up neighborhoods across Maryland one brushstroke at a time.

On Friday, the team officially unveiled their latest mural in the Merriweather District, the newest installment in their “Paint the State Purple” art program.

The initiative, which kicked off in Towson back in 2023, brings together professional artists and passionate fans to celebrate the Ravens’ deep roots in Maryland communities.

This latest splash of purple pride comes courtesy of Baltimore native and renowned artist Megan Lewis. Her vibrant creation now graces the western side of Toastique, adjacent to Color Burst Park.

At its center, a young boy is surrounded by a blooming garden, representing growth, joy, and the bright future of Baltimore’s youth. Behind him? A double-dose of inspiration: silhouettes of Baltimore’s creative soul and the electrifying energy of a Ravens play about to unfold.

“This mural celebrates the beauty that comes from nurturing our youth,” said Lewis, via press release. “The boy is the light. It’s a reminder that when we pour into young people, everything around them thrives.”

Josh Lukin, the Ravens’ senior director of brand strategy and advertising, praised Lewis for capturing the heart of the neighborhood. “Megan’s vision captures the connection the Ravens have made with the Howard County community, while also incorporating Merriweather District’s maxim ‘city in a garden,’” Lukin said. “She has created a piece of art uniquely fitting for the neighborhood.”

The mural debuts just in time for the Merriweather District’s ninth annual Books in Bloom festival on May 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There’ll be books, authors, family-friendly activities — and a special appearance by Ravens cheerleaders and everyone’s favorite feathered friend, Poe, from 12 to 1 p.m. for photos with fans in front of the mural. The event is free and open to the public.

“The Merriweather District was always envisioned as a dynamic community hub where residents, visitors and businesses alike can thrive through shared experiences and cultural events in thoughtfully-designed public spaces,” stated Kristi Smith, president of the Maryland Region at Howard Hughes, via press release. “Megan’s mural embodies the essence of that vision for the Merriweather District. We are excited to welcome her work and see it become a community centerpiece.”

As Lewis put it: “I’ve always been a Ravens fan. I’m proud to call both the team and this city home and to help beautify the place I love.”
