Averill Park, NY (WRGB) — A Capital Region coach is earning recognition on the national stage. The New York Giants named Averill Park High School’s Zach Gobel their Coach of the Week.

The honor highlights high school coaches who show dedication not only to their teams but also to their communities.

“It’s certainly an honor and it’s humbling to get something like that from the Giants,” Gobel said. “An award like this is, you know, while I’m the one being named, it’s certainly both a staff, school, community, and family honor to get… Averill Park is a community, it’s a great place to work and a great community to be a part of.”

Gobel has been the Averill Park’s varsity football coach since 2009 and also serves as a physical education teacher. He guided the program to its first sectional title last year and holds a career record of 90-60.

His team has never finished the regular season with a record below .500 since 2015.

As part of the award, the Giants will grant a $2,000 check to the football program. Gobel will also be recognized at a dinner with the Giants organization at the end of the season.
