Backup 49ers quarterback Mac Jones isn’t your typical reserve.

The 27-year-old has a noticeable aura.

Edge rusher Nick Bosa and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne spoke highly of Jones’ energy with reporters after San Francisco’s 26-21 Week 2 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, and each had similar conclusions.

“He’s just fun,” Bosa said. “Fun energy. To have a backup quarterback who has that much swagger – the offense feeds off of it. And he did a great job today.”

“Mac got that swag now,” Bourne added. “Don’t sleep on him. … Mac got that swag. He knows what he’s doing. He knows how to connect with us, and I think it’s super important as a quarterback.”

Jones sure does have swag.

He marched into Caesars Superdome with the sole responsibility of replacing Brock Purdy and left with 279 yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 26-of-39 passing.

Bourne, who played with Jones in New England during the quarterback’s three seasons with the Patriots, caught three of Jones’ passes for 32 yards. The wideout discussed how Jones’ presence has helped him transition since re-joining the 49ers last week.

“It’s just still ironic to me that we’re teammates and stuff like that,” Bourne said. “So, that connection’s there — the trust and understanding and things like that. [I’m] just having his back when he comes my way, trying to be in the right spots.

“But [I’m] just glad to be playing with that guy again; it definitely helped the transition for me.”

The 49ers signed Jones this offseason to have insurance behind Purdy. So far, the veteran signal-caller has done everything asked of him and more, in the form of swagger.
