Title-winning boss Steven Gerrard is reportedly being considered by the incoming US consortium as a candidate for the Rangers hot seat.

American pharmaceutical tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are inching closer to the control at Ibrox and a new boss is high on their list of priorities.

Interim boss Barry Ferguson has held the position since February after the legendary skipper stepped into the dugout after Philippe Clement was shown the door.

Now The Telegraph report that the Liverpool icon is on the longlist of managerial candidates as the Scottish Premiership season nears a conclusion.

Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq earlier this season with the club plummeting towards the Saudi Pro League drop zone.

His time in the Middle East followed up an ill-fated spell in the Premier League with Aston Villa – after he left Ibrox in 2021 – with the Midlands outfit also facing a scrap at the foot of the table before Gerrard was shown the door.

Gerrard’s past success with the Light Blues is seen as a major asset despite disappointing spells away from Ibrox.

It is claimed that the new owners list of candidates runs into double figures with former Southampton boss Russell Martin – who spent time at Rangers as a player – also in the running.

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil and ex-Luton Town manager Rob Edwards are also said to be “under consideration”. It is noted that the longlist also includes foreign candidates.
