The Green Bay Packers will avoid facing one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks in October. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow needs surgery on a toe injury suffered on Sunday and will miss at least three months, meaning he’ll miss Cincinnati’s Week 6 trip to Lambeau Field.

Burrow led the NFL in passing yards (4,918) and passing touchdowns (43) last season. He played in all 17 games, leading the Bengals to a 9-8 record but missing out on the playoffs in the AFC.

Jake Browning is the backup quarterback in Cincinnati. He threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran in the go-ahead score as the Bengals came back and beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. An undrafted free agent out of Washington, Browning has seven career starts — all coming as a rookie in place of Burrow in 2023. He threw 12 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, completed over 70 percent of his passes and led the Bengals to a 4-3 record, including two come-from-behind wins.

Burrow has previously faced Matt LaFleur’s team only once — a wild 25-22 overtime loss to the Packers in Cincinnati during the 2021 season. The Packers intercepted him twice, but Burrow completed 26 passes for 281 yards and two scores.

The Bengals are 2-0 after two weeks, but now Browning will be tasked with keeping Zac Taylor’s team in the postseason hunt until Burrow can possibly return late in the year. A quality backup like Browning can’t be overlooked, especially with all the weapons on offense in Cincinnati. The Packers were able to win several games last season with backup Malik Willis under center.

But there is no doubting that not having to face Burrow does increase the Packers’ chances of winning a home game against the Bengals on Oct. 12.

However, the Packers aren’t the only team in the NFC North who will avoid facing Burrow. The Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions all play the Bengals between now and Week 9.
