Mike Vrabel was fired up, and with good reason.

Vrabel had just earned his first win as New England Patriots head coach in a city where the team hadn’t won since 2019. His squad overcame five lead changes and a fourth-quarter punt return touchdown to earn a gritty, 33-27 victory over the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins.

So, it was no surprise that Vrabel was very animated during his postgame locker room speech at Hard Rock Stadium as he handed out multiple game balls.

Don’t be mistaken, though: Vrabel will still have plenty to go over with his players in the film room.

The Patriots played far from a perfect game, committing a whopping 12 penalties for 75 yards, missing two extra point attempts and allowing more than 300 passing yards for the second straight week.

Our Patriots Insider Phil Perry broke down both the good and the bad in his “Stock Watch” from New England’s Week 2 win. Here are Perry’s “Stock Up” and “Stock Down” selections:

Stock Up

Drake Maye, quarterback

This was Drake Maye’s best game as a pro. He went 19-for-23 for 230 yards and two touchdown passes. He scooted in for another score in the third quarter. He made smart decisions. It was the kind of all-around performance the Patriots envisioned when they drafted him No. 3 last year. — Perry

Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator

Screens timed perfectly against Dolphins blitzes. Bootleg passes — perhaps inspired in part by passing game coordinator Thomas Brown, who has extensive experience in West Coast attacks — that helped Drake Maye get settled. Run calls that were varied and effective. The result? The organization’s first 30-point game since 2022. — Perry

Rhamondre Stevenson, running back

Stevenson made the play of the afternoon, reeling in a fingertip grab on a down-the-field throw from Drake Maye for a 55-yard catch-and-run. He led the Patriots in receiving (five catches, 88 yards) and rushing (11 carries, 54 yards), and was given a game ball from Mike Vrabel for his efforts. — Perry

Stock Down

Andy Borregales, kicker

Mike Vrabel stuck with his kicker, calling on Andy Borregales to kick a 53-yarder in the fourth quarter, which the rookie drilled. But before that kick and after, there were mistakes. He missed two extra points earlier in the game, and he didn’t hit the “landing zone” on the ensuing kick immediately after his long make.

Vrabel gave Borregales a game ball after the win, but the sixth-round pick told reporters later, “I have to be better.” — Perry

Morgan Moses, offensive tackle

The 12-year veteran picked up three false-start penalties on Sunday. As a team, the Patriots were penalized 12 times for 75 yards. Moses had been questionable to play due to a foot injury, but he did suit up, as he expected. Moses prides himself on being available, having started in all 158 games in which he’s appeared since his second season. — Perry

Patriots secondary

Tua Tagovailoa lost to the Patriots for the first time in eight starts on Sunday, but he still had himself a game. With the Patriots trying to take away the middle of the field and forcing Tagovailoa to attack outside the numbers, he still made them pay, passing for 315 yards, 9.8 yards per attempt, two touchdowns and one pick.

The Patriots defense has now allowed two straight 300-yard passers after losing to Geno Smith and the Raiders in Week 1. — Perry
