Philadelphia Sports fans are no strangers to great defense being the key to the Eagles success over the years. Since 1985, the Eagles have run out onto the field a Top Ten Defense in 16 seasons and a winning record in 12 of those years.

The Eagles have run out onto the field some great defensive players over the decades; Reggie White and Eric Allen to Brian Dawkins and Trent Cole, plus don’t forget about Fletcher Cox and Malcolm Jenkins.

Philadelphia has been famous around the NFL for employing some great Defensive Coaches from Buddy Ryan to Jim Johnson to Bud Carson to Jim Schwartz.  In fact, all five seasons the Eagles reached the Super Bowl, the team was a Top Ten Ranked Defense in the NFL that year.

But could the Eagles’ current Defense Coordinator be one of the best coaches in Franchise History?

In 2023, Philadelphia had statistically their worst defense since 2015 and the second-worst since 1990. So the hiring of Vic Fangio ahead of the 2024 NFL season was a major upgrade for the Eagles after the miserable ending to the previous year.

Before coming to Philadelphia, Fangio had 23 years of coaching in the NFL. In nine of those seasons, his defenses ranked Top Ten in the NFL. His success coaching young players made his hire even more valuable for an Eagles team that had seen some veteran players either retire or leave in Free Agency.

The Eagles went from allowing the third-most points per game in 2023 (25.2) to the second-fewest in the NFL (17.8) in the 2024 season. Even though 12 teams had more Sacks than Philadelphia last year, their Defense allowed the fewest Passing Yards in the NFL in 2024 (2,961).

The 2024 Eagles Defense allowed only 9.76 Points Per Game in the second half of their games in the regular season plus postseason. Fangio has displayed an elite ability to make adjustments in-game and has his team playing better in the second half.

Remember, the only two games the Eagles allowed more points in the second half compared to first half was the Commanders loss (CJ Gardner-Johnson got ejected) and the close win over the Jaguars (Slay was unavailable with a Knee Injury). When the Eagles are healthy, Fangio has been shutting most teams down in the second half.

In 2025, after two games, the Eagles Defense has allowed a total of seven points in the second half. The Chiefs scored a Touchdown at 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and the Cowboys scored zero points in the second half versus Philadelphia.

While Head Coach Nick Sirianni has a 71.4 percent winning percentage in his first 70 games coached, we cannot ignore that Philadelphia has a top ten defense in three of his five seasons with the Eagles. Fangio is one of only two defensive coordinators to win a Super Bowl Championship with Philadelphia, and his defense has almost singlehandedly won the Eagles’ first two games of the 2025 season.
