New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo scored his first NFL touchdown in a Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.Skattebo’s performance has led to questions about his potential to become the team’s primary running back.
New York Giants coach Brian Daboll said after their Week 2 overtime loss at the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 14 that their running back depth chart, including rookie Cam Skattebo, will be decided “game to game.”
The Arizona State product Skattebo continued to impress the media and Giants fans, questioning if he could rise to be their RB1 over Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary.
Skattebo had 11 carries for 45 rushing yards, and got his first NFL touchdown after a vital 24-yard run deep into the red zone early in the fourth quarter. His TD briefly put the Giants ahead 23-20.
“Whatever my role is, I’m gonna do my best to execute it,” Skattebo said after the game.
He praised his teammates and was grateful for his opportunities, playing 35 snaps, but wasn’t satisfied with his own yardage.
“Fifty yards in my eyes is not enough, but that’s the way the game went,” Skattebo said. “We fought at the end. I’m proud of our team. I’m proud of the offensive line. They did a great job. They battled it tough … Props to those guys. Props to the rest of the receivers.
“They did a great job on the edges, being able to open up things for me on the inside. We had a hard-fought battle right there.”

The fourth-round pick Skattebo’s energy and physicality — breaking two tackles on his 1-yard TD — is infectious to the Giants offense.
That same old school rough-and-tough grit was shown when he broke two tackles and nearly bulldozed his way through a third for his first ever reception in the Giants’ 21-6 Week 1 loss at Washington on Sept. 7.
That play, which earned him the “Angry Run” award from NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt last week, was his Welcome to the NFL moment.
Tracy is still No. 1 in the Giants RB room, according to Daboll. The second-year back played 28 snaps, had 51 yards: 15 on the ground from five attempts and 36 on four catches against Dallas. Both Skattebo and Tracy had some time playing on special teams. Tracy had five kick returns for 132 yards.
Although Singletary started against Dallas, he finished with one carry for 4 yards and one reception for minus-4.
Daboll explained what he saw in Skattebo’s performance against Dallas, and his approach to all three of his RBs entering Week 3.
“Skat was running hard,” Daboll said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Tracy. He did a good job on our kickoff returns. So we’ve got three guys who you can use and if we think one’s running pretty good or feeling it, we’ll get it to him. And if not, we’ll use all three of them. I have confidence in all three of those guys.”
