HOUSTON – Huddling up with the Eisenhower High School football team, Texans wide receiver Braxton Berrios spent time throwing the football around and giving back on his day off Tuesday.
“Talked to them for a while,” Berrios told KPRC 2. “Great kids.”
On Sunday, Berrios returns from a strained hamstring that sidelined him for the first two games of the season. He’s poised to play in his first regular-season game since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee last October with the Miami Dolphins.
Berrios caught a touchdown in a preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. He’s a former All-Pro selection who has 134 career catches for 1,323 yards and six touchdowns with 3,289 return yards and four rushing touchdowns.
“It’s been since Oct. 20, 2024 that I played in a real NFL regular season game,” Berrios said. “I can’t wait.”
Berrios partnered with Fogo de Chão to benefit No Kid Hungry. He prepped meals personally alongside the restaurant staff.
Since he signed with the Texans in the offseason, the former All-Pro return specialist has gotten heavily involved in the community.
“It’s awesome,” Berrios said. “This community has accepted me with open arms and always the one, so you know just to be able to come out here and show my gratitude for being able to do this here at Eisenhower High School has been really good.”
Today was obviously the first game I’ve had since October 20, so it’s been a while,” Berrios said. “And coming back from an ACL, there’s ups and there’s downs. There’s a lot of things that you can fight through. There’s the same thing from a mental and emotional as well. So, obviously today was great, getting back out there.
“To me, a long way to go still. I feel great, but it’s going to take time and I’m looking forward to the fact that I think it will only be better than anything else. It was good, man. Obviously you play this game to produce for your team and when you get opportunities like that, that was set up so well by everybody else doing their job, it feels great.”
To provide a boost to food-insecure children is significant for Berrios.
“Absolutely, I think we can all get caught up in our day-to-day lives and each of us has problems in their world,” Berrios said. ” We really take it into perspective. Our problems are very fortunate problems. As much as I can give back and share, right? As much gratitude and to be there any way that I can, I really try to.
“Phenomenal. They’ve done a great job in partnership with No Kid Hungry, and I think together they’ve made over 13 million meals together. So, this is obviously a small extension of that, but something I’m very happy to do.”
