“Can’t Wait.”
Every New York Jets fan will remember the iconic quote from Jets linebacker Bart Scott, uttered on national television after Gang Green defeated the New England Patriots and punched their ticket to the AFC championship game in January 2011.
Speaking on VICE TV’s “NFL Classics After Further Review” with host Kyle Brandt, Scott spoke on why his speech still resonates with fans over a decade later.
“Everybody who could relate to that are the people who were doubtful, and thought it was a preconceived outcome,” said the former Jet. “Everybody can relate to that at some point in life when people tell you what you can’t do, but they don’t know what you have between your chest. That’s what you can’t measure. Just because you can’t do it, people want to project that onto you. We knew what we were, who we were, and we knew we were about all that smoke, and we knew when we laced up, we could compete with anybody.”
A Detroit native, Scott broke into the NFL in 2002 as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens.
He carved out a reputation as a hard-hitting linebacker across seven seasons in Baltimore before heading to the New York Jets in 2009. Scott spent the next four years anchoring Rex Ryan’s defense, playing a pivotal role in back-to-back trips to the AFC championship game in 2009 and 2010.
Scott’s “Can’t Wait” speech still resonates with Jets fans more than a decade later, and it ensures his legacy will forever live on among New York’s fanbase.
