Following the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the legendary Ben Roethlisberger, like many fans, is growing tired of Mike Tomlin’s “the standard is the standard” philosophy.
On Tuesday’s episode of the Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast, Big Ben shared a concern with Tomlin’s standard motto — arguing for some much-needed change in attitude on defense.

“I know that there were seasons, when I was there in Pittsburgh, where it was like if the opposing team had 101 yards, the defense was mad, no one wanted to talk to anybody,” Roethlisberger said. “I know, ‘the standard is the standard,’ but maybe the standard should be shifted a little bit. I’m sure they won’t agree with that. But you’re telling me that teams are rushing for 100 every single week now.”
Roethlisberger’s calls for change have long been echoed by Steelers Nation, who have often decried Tomlin’s complacency, game management, predictability, and selection of coaching staff.
It’s far too early to consider this high-powered Steelers team unfixable, but unless the standard of mediocrity shows signs of change against the New England Patriots in Week 3, fans may be in store for a long 2025 season.
