CLEVELAND, Ohio — Russell Wilson doesn’t mince words when asked about his teammate Wan’Dale Robinson. The veteran quarterback’s assessment comes quickly and decisively: “Wandell’s a superstar, man.”
This isn’t just casual praise.
Wilson delivered a masterclass in teammate appreciation, breaking down exactly what makes Robinson such a special talent in the Giants’ offense.
“I just love how he competes. I love how he plays the game. He sees the game well,” Wilson explained, before making a particularly revealing comparison. “He’s like a quarterback out there playing receiver. He understands everything, understands his route concepts and where to be.”
What stands out about Wilson’s evaluation isn’t just acknowledging Robinson’s physical talents, but his repeated emphasis on the receiver’s mental approach and processing abilities. This cognitive aspect of Robinson’s game appears to be what truly separates him in Wilson’s estimation.
When pressed to compare Robinson to other receivers he’s played with throughout his distinguished NFL career, Wilson offered a comparison that speaks volumes.
“Yeah, he reminds me a lot of Tyler Lockett,” Wilson shared. “Tyler was a guy who loved the game, saw the game well, had a great feel for space… I think Wandelle, he’s got a very similar nature in just terms of his love for his teammates, his love for the game.”
The Lockett comparison is particularly meaningful given Wilson’s personal connection to his former Seattle teammate. “Tyler’s one of my favorite all-time people and also one of my favorite guys I’ve ever got to play with,” Wilson noted.
Beyond the mental aspects of Robinson’s game, Wilson made sure to highlight the receiver’s toughness – a quality that clearly resonates with the quarterback. Recounting a memorable example, Wilson shared: “I remember he knocked Brian Burns knocked his tooth out he wanted to get back up and get back in there and play and just that the mentality of him is special.”
That toughness, combined with Robinson’s versatility, has created a foundation of complete trust between quarterback and receiver. With the game on the line, Wilson knows where he’s looking.
“There’s nothing that he can’t do,” Wilson emphasized. “When the lights are on, you know, I have all the trust in the world for him to make that play.”
This level of quarterback confidence can be transformative for a receiver’s career. Robinson is entering just his third NFL season after battling injuries, but Wilson’s effusive praise suggests the Giants may have a breakout star on their hands.
The podcast conversation revealed not just Wilson’s appreciation for Robinson’s on-field abilities, but the relationship they’ve built through dedicated work together. Wilson detailed offseason training sessions in San Diego and Atlanta, highlighting the “extra work” they’ve invested in developing chemistry.
For Giants fans, Wilson’s assessment of Robinson should generate significant excitement. When a quarterback with Wilson’s experience and accomplishments identifies a receiver as having star potential, it’s worth paying attention.
